Moyo: Building a Framework
A moyo is a large framework of potential territory — a wide area you've sketched out with loosely placed stones, not yet solid points but a promise of them. Playing with a moyo is one of Go's most powerful and satisfying strategies, and one of its trickiest to handle well.

What a moyo is
A moyo isn't territory yet — it's a framework. The stones face outward and stake a claim over a big region, daring the opponent to invade. If they invade and you kill or contain the invasion, the moyo becomes real territory. If they reduce it safely, you gain thickness and influence instead. Either way, a moyo puts your opponent under pressure.
Building a moyo
Moyos grow from influence-oriented moves: fourth-line stones, walls that face open space, and stones that work together across the board rather than tightly walling off one corner. The art is scale — a moyo too small isn't worth the influence you spent, and one too large can't all become territory.
Attacking and defending a moyo
If you face a moyo, you have two choices: invade deep and try to live inside it, or reduce it from the outside to keep it from getting huge. Invading is riskier but denies more points. If you own the moyo, use the invasion — don't try to kill at all costs; often the profit comes from chasing the invader while turning the rest into solid territory.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a moyo in Go?
- A moyo is a large framework of potential territory — a region you've claimed with influence-oriented stones. It isn't guaranteed points yet, but it pressures the opponent to invade or reduce it before it becomes real territory.
- How do you play against a moyo?
- Either invade it deeply and try to live inside, or reduce it from the outside to limit its size. Invading denies more points but is riskier; reducing is safer but concedes more territory.
- Is a moyo the same as territory?
- No. Territory is space you already control; a moyo is potential territory — a framework that still has to survive invasions and reductions before those points are actually yours.
